My pet died at home. What are my options?

Navigating Aftercare When a Pet Passes at Home

Saying goodbye to a beloved pet is never easy—and when that loss happens at home, it can leave you feeling overwhelmed with questions. At Two Rivers Veterinary Hospital, we want you to know that you’re not alone. Whether you're unsure of next steps or simply need a compassionate ear, our team is here to help guide you through your pet's aftercare with respect and tenderness.

If your pet passes away at home, there are a few options available for aftercare in the Fargo/Moorhead area. We work with two local businesses that offer dignified services to honor your pet's life:

  • Pet Services provides traditional, flame-based cremation with the option of receiving your pet's ashes back in a basic or upgraded urn.

  • Eternal Tides is a newer, locally owned aquamation (water-based cremation) provider offering sustainable, meaningful alternatives. In addition to gentle aquamation, Eternal Tides provides space for private memorials, and partners with regional artists to create one-of-a-kind urns and remembrance pieces. They even offer the unique opportunity to commission a song in your pet’s honor—an incredibly personal way to celebrate their memory.

You are welcome to bring your pet directly to either facility, but if you'd prefer not to navigate this on your own, we’re here to help. You may bring your pet to our clinic, where we can temporarily house them and coordinate aftercare services on your behalf. Just call ahead so we can prepare for your arrival.

If you’re considering a home burial, please be aware of local regulations. Within Fargo or Moorhead city limits, burial is typically not allowed. Even outside city limits, special precautions are required—especially if your pet was euthanized. The euthanasia solution remains active after death and can be fatal to wildlife. If burial is permitted in your area, your pet must be placed in a leak-proof container to prevent contamination of soil and groundwater and to keep scavengers away.

You gave your pet a life filled with love. Allow us to help you honor their passing with the same care. If you have any questions or need help making arrangements, please reach out—we’re always here to support you.
